African Epidemiological Federation Officially Launched

The African Epidemiological Federation ( AEF ) was officially launched on 13 March, 2012, in Calabar, Nigeria. AEF was launched during the 2nd Annual General Meeting of the Epidemiological Association meeting of Nigeria ( EPISON ). The Federation was declared by Past President of IEA, Professor Neil Pierce. In attendance were the African Regional Councillor, IEA, Dr Kingsley Akinroye and the President of the Public Health Association of Nigeria, Professor Obehi Okojie. AEF delegates fom Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa and Nigeria were also present. Over 150 partipants from Nigeria attended the EPISON meeting.

The African Epidemiological Federation was created for the following reasons:

  • To promote the vision and mission of IEA in the African Region
  • To promote educational and training programs through organisation of National, Regional conferences, seminars, workshops for all professional cadres and policy makers
  • Collaborate and establish linkages with other National and Regional organisations for the promotion of epidemiology in the African Region
  • Bridge the communication gaps across African Countries
  • Promote collaboration with WHO Regional and Country offices
  • Address the language barriers amongst Franco, Anglo, and Lusaphone Epidemiologists at the African Regional level

The African Epidemiological Federation will involving all Countries in Africa. AEF promotes and supports the formation of National Epidemiological Associations in all countries, as feasible, and encourages individuals to participate in AEF activities where the National Associations are not yet created.

  • AEF members within each country will promote IEA activities to identified professional individuals, groups and policy makers:
  • Forge linkages with existing relevant professional organisations, relevant stakeholders in the practice and use of epidemiology, and policy makers
  • Support of Early Career Epidemiologists in training and Research, and Mentorship
  • Promote formal collaboration with relevant International organisations in the African Region ( WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF, INCLEN, PHA’S) to enhance epidemiology in the African Region and at country level.
