Brief about XI IEA-SEA Meet at Pokhara, Nepal

The XI IEA-SEA Regional Meeting was held on 27-29 Sept, 2013 in Pokhara, Nepal; one of the most beautiful regions of Asia, amongst the Himalayas. The meeting was attended by over 350 participants from different SEA nations, especially Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Srilanka. There were some 200 presentations, oral and poster, with several plenary sessions, including one on: “Scientific Writing” (George Davey Smith), “Global warming” and “Ethics in Health Research”. The inaugural session took place in the evening of Sept 27, 2013, in the presence of HE Secretary, Nepalese Ministry of Health & Population and WHO Representative in Nepal. The Secretary presented an excellent public health oriented speech, which emphasized the role of epidemiology in prevention and control of the triple burden of disease currently being faced by the countries of the region particularly Nepal and welcomed the joint work between the Nepal government, IEA and WHO in this regard. The WR Nepal emphasized the role of WHO in support of different health promotion initiatives in Nepal and SEA. Dr Ahmed Mandil, the IEA Treasurer presented a historical overview of IEA, with special emphasis on our networking activities, publications, global and regional activities, especially upcoming ones in Alaska and Japan. The meeting ended by a show planned for and implemented by medical students from the Manipal College of Medical Sciences, the host institution, which not only presented local cultural songs and dances, but also tackled very important public health and social issues in this part of the world.
