International Journal of Epidemiology announces new Editors-in-Chief

The International Epidemiological Association (IEA) is pleased to share that the International Journal of Epidemiology has appointed two new Editors-in-Chief, marking a planned and carefully managed leadership transition undertaken in alignment with Oxford University Press (OUP).

This transition reflects the Journal’s continued commitment to excellence in epidemiological research and to strengthening its global leadership in the field.

We are delighted to introduce:

José Leopoldo Ferreira Antunes is Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health of the University of São Paulo, where he served as Dean from 2022 to 2026. He holds PhDs in Sociology (1994) and Public Health/Epidemiology (2005), both from the University of São Paulo.

Prof. Antunes brings extensive editorial experience, having served as Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board member for several international journals in public health and epidemiology. He is currently a national consultant for Epidemiology at the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.

A longstanding member of the IEA, he has been actively engaged in its congresses and initiatives. His research focuses on health inequalities, particularly their measurement, social determinants, and the impact of public health interventions. He is currently leading a major research initiative on the resilience of health systems in the face of pandemics and environmental threats.

Marco A. Peres is Professor and Director of the Academic Clinical Programme for Oral Health at Duke-NUS Medical School, and Deputy CEO for Research, Education and Innovation at the National Dental Centre Singapore. He earned his PhD in Epidemiology jointly from the University of São Paulo and University College London, and has held senior academic leadership roles in Brazil and Australia, including as Director of the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health.

Prof. Peres’ research spans oral health policy, health services research, life-course epidemiology, and the links between oral and general health, with a strong focus on health inequalities and data-driven public health strategies. He has played a prominent role in global health leadership, including contributing to the Lancet Commission on Oral Health and international research collaborations. In recognition of his work, he received the 2017 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Global Oral Health Research.

The IEA warmly welcomes Professors Antunes and Peres to their roles and looks forward to working closely with them to continue advancing the International Journal of Epidemiology as a leading platform for high-quality, impactful research.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Leeder, for his dedicated service and significant contributions to the Journal’s success.
