In memoriam: Dr. Roger Detels

The International Epidemiological Association (IEA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Roger Detels, Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, on 25 July 2026.

Dr. Detels was a highly respected epidemiologist, former President of the IEA, and a dedicated mentor who inspired and supported generations of epidemiologists around the world. Through his leadership, scholarship, and unwavering commitment to public health, he made lasting contributions to the advancement of epidemiology globally.

On behalf of the global IEA community, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and former students. Dr. Detels’ legacy will continue to inspire epidemiologists for many years to come.
